Recess

I was walking today in an effort to improve my health and allow myself to live long enough to knit every project queued in my head. The elementary school was out at recess. Lots of boys and girls were running, skipping, throwing balls. One girl of ten stood by herself. She seemed a lot like me at ten: skinny legs, crooked teeth, the appearance of preferring a book to all that running. I wish I could tell her that everything will be fine. If I had known at 10 how rich and happy my life was to be, I might have been happier then. I wish I had known that I would get at least a little less funny-looking, be loved by a great man like David, and have the family I so enjoy.

If I had known there would be knitting.

If I had known there would be the Traveling Sweater Pattern and deeply colored Blue Moon WooBoo to make The Sweater I Will Wear for the Rest of My Life and My Children Will Treasure Because it is So Mom.

Someday my yarn will come.

Calling Rainbow Brite

I had such a happy response to this yarn when I encountered it in the shop. Look at the happy colors. Feel the baby-soft, kitten-soft, buttersilksofty- softness of the Malabrigo. I could just be happy looking at it in the yarn basket beside my knitting spot. Perhaps I could make something....

I had visions of something funky and fun. I thought of the Worm scarf by Cocoknits. http://cocoknits.com/knit/garments/accessories/wormscarf.html I recently made one of those in cream colored Lumpy Dumpy yarn. I cast on.

My daughter Jennifer said it looked like it would result in a scarf that looked like a poisonous tropical millipede and that "she would not wear it".

I swatched in many needle sizes and determined that it looked best in stockinette. Let the yarn do the talking. Here it is in a simple rectangle scarf that I believe will be cheery to wrap around my neck next winter.

The world needs another knitting blog

Today I read instructions for starting a blog on Blogger and decided to do this. A case of Startitis without yarn.

I think that working on one thing at a time results in more finished projects, but find that I am most satisfied when I've done some work on several different textures and gauges and shapes over a good day of knitting.

Today I've done elongated garter stitch on a Stormcloud Shawlette, stockinette with bright colored Malabrigo worsted--sooooo soft, cast on an acrylic baby blanket, and will end my day with a sock yarn shawl in the colors of my NBA team. This yarn is called Ebullient in Rip City colorway by Frog Creek Fibers.www.etsy.com/shop/FrogCreekFibers I'l knit this while watching the first game of the playoffs. I'll need at least 10 games to finish this, so Go Blazers!
